The organization’s unique model builds wealth for artists through homeownership and transforms vacant spaces into cultural assets with communities

St. Louis, MO (March 24, 2026)— St. Louis Art Place Initiative (API) is proud to have been named to Fast Company’s prestigious list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2026 for their inventive model that makes a direct impact. This year’s list shines a spotlight on projects that are shaping industry and culture through their innovations. Alongside the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies, Fast Company recognizes 720 honorees across 59 sectors and regions.

“Arts-based community development is one of the best tools in St. Louis’ toolbox to strengthen neighborhoods, while supporting artists and our regional economy,” said Jennifer Allen, Executive Director of API. “In a time where so many are working to fix systemic issues, St. Louis Art Place Initiative is doing so on the ground, at the neighborhood scale.”

Founded in 2019 to implement community priorities laid out in the 2018 Gravois-Jefferson Historic Neighborhoods Plan, St. Louis Art Place Initiative (API) has been proving a model to keep artists rooted in their neighborhoods through affordable homeownership, while reducing vacancy and working to create cultural assets to be owned by the community. Artists provide so many cultural benefits to communities, but the traditional path to homeownership for those who work on a gig or commission based income can be complicated. Through creative, win-win-win collaborations with partners, API has been able to make an important contribution to artists’ lives while transforming vacancy.

API has sold two homes and will complete and sell three more in the next month, with another 10 in development. Additionally, API has been making progress on the design and construction of an artist residency, community art space and garden, and pocket parks that will be owned and stewarded by a cultural land trust, which is currently being created.

“When you hear about it, it’s like, whoa, is anyone else doing that?” said artist Stan Chisholm, known as 18andCounting, who closed on his first home, which was API’s first home in 2021. “It’s nice to see an organization making sure that our artists stay put. You become even more committed when you have a place that you’re invested in, a place that you’re going to evolve, your family is going to evolve around.”

The World’s Most Innovative Companies is Fast Company’s much-anticipated annual hallmark; editors and writers review companies driving progress around the world and across industries, evaluating

thousands of submissions through a competitive process to showcase standouts from early-stage startups to some of the most valuable companies in the world.

“Our list of the Most Innovative Companies is about spotlighting organizations that don’t just adapt to change—they drive it,” said Brendan Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “The companies we honor this year are redefining what leadership looks like in 2026, pairing bold ideas with measurable impact and turning breakthrough innovation into real-world value.”
